Driven by a passion to combat food insecurity, Nathan Atkinson co-founded Rethink Food in 2018 after two decades in education, including his role as a headteacher in a large, inner-city primary school. There, he witnessed firsthand how hunger can hinder learning and hold students back from reaching their full potential.
Under Nathan’s leadership, Rethink Food has grown to support over 650 schools across the UK, delivering thousands of hours of educational support focused on health, wellbeing, and food security. With a team of 12 full-time staff and 10 full-time equivalent volunteers, the organisation is committed to creating immediate and long-term solutions to food insecurity, empowering children and families to thrive.
Nathan has cultivated impactful partnerships with leading brands, including Savills, amplifying Rethink Food’s mission through strategic collaborations. His dedication to social impact has been widely recognised – he was named a Top 50 Finalist in the 2017 Global Teacher Award, received the British Citizen Award Medal of Honour for Service to Education, and in 2025 was awarded Yorkshire Business Leader of the Year for the Public and Charity Sector.
Beyond Rethink Food, Nathan serves as a trustee at UnLtd, guiding initiatives that empower social entrepreneurs to tackle pressing social issues. His career is defined by a relentless commitment to addressing health inequalities through practical, scalable solutions – from local classrooms to national platforms.
