Driven by a passion to tackle food insecurity and health inequality, Nathan Atkinson co-founded Rethink Food CIC in 2018 after two decades in education, including as a headteacher in a large inner-city primary school. It was there he saw first hand how hunger impacts learning and wellbeing, shaping his belief that food isn’t the issue, it reveals the issue.
Under Nathan’s leadership, Rethink Food now supports over 650 schools across the UK, delivering education and practical support focused on health, sustainability and food security. The organisation also leads the National School Pantry Network, helping schools support families with dignity while building stronger communities.
In 2026, Rethink Food was recognised in the Top 100 UK Social Enterprises in the NatWest SE100 Index 2026 for the second consecutive year. Nathan is a recognised voice in education, social impact and community resilience. His work has earned multiple honours, including the British Citizen Award Medal of Honour for Service to Education and Yorkshire Business Leader of the Year for the Public and Charity Sector.
Beyond Rethink Food, Nathan serves as a trustee at UnLtd, supporting social entrepreneurs creating positive change across the UK.
