How embedded power generation should be at the heart of new settlements, in order that they can thrive. Different ownership models that can help secure pivotal energy infrastructure. Technological advancements including private wire systems, microgrids, and behind‑the‑meter solutions. And the importance of collaboration between landowners, developers, investors and local authorities to ensure energy security that meets the need of future generations. Reimagining the urban campus: how can London power the next wave of university expansion?
UK higher education institutions are currently navigating a second consecutive year of declining international student numbers, causing competition for talent to intensify. While the global prestige of UK universities remains strong, shifting student expectations towards employability, connectivity and experience are reshaping how and where education is delivered.
In an increasingly competitive landscape, a growing number of regional universities are establishing satellite campuses in major cities such as London. These urban outposts offer more than just additional teaching space; they present a chance to embed students within dynamic commercial ecosystems, unlocking direct access to industry, networks and career pathways, as well as proximity to the culture and experience of city centres.
However, they don’t offer the “campus life” associated with the traditional university experience.
The discussion will explore how locating satellite campuses within managed mixed-use estates can help bridge the gap between traditional campus environments and urban settings, offering a comparable sense of community, identity and on-site amenities, alongside the added benefits of proximity to city centres, culture and employment.
Using Sugar House Island as a case study, now home to the University of Huddersfield and Stratford College, we will examine how place-based ecosystems can support the success and well-being of both students and staff. Our discussion will aim to identify the DNA of the next generation urban campuses, from estate strategy and placemaking to cross-sector partnerships.

Shaping the future: building resilience across the living sectors
With the Renters’ Rights Act now in force, the UK living sectors are entering a defining phase. The removal of fixed-term tenancies, rising compliance expectations and continued planning and building safety pressures are reshaping how rental housing is developed, operated and financed.
At the same time, capital continues to flow into alternative living formats, from single-family rental to co-living and operationally intensive purpose-built student accommodation, creating a more diversified but increasingly complex market.
This roundtable will explore how investors and operators can move beyond short-term regulatory adaptation and instead embed resilience into their long-term strategies.
